Dupont Circle

Stroll along Embassy Row, where Beaux Arts mansions line tree-shaded streets. Or visit the Phillips Collection, which boasts works by Matisse and van Gogh. Don't forget to people-watch at Dupont Circle, where bicycle messengers, street musicians and chess players add to the local scenery. Once you're ready to explore the District further, hop on the Metro.

Georgetown

Stroll the picturesque campus of historic Georgetown University, or take a guided tour for an in-depth look. Just outside the gates, be sure to check out the area's colorful 18th-century row houses. Historic sights in the village include the C & O Canal, the Old Stone House and the Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitors and residents flock to the Georgetown Flea Market on Sunday mornings in search of hidden treasure.

Alexandria and Old Town

Across the Potomac from Washington DC on the Virginia side, this seaport town includes a charming colonial district with cobblestone streets. Stroll along the Potomac waterfront and past King Street shops, pubs and restaurants. Browse for hand-crafted souvenirs at the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Once you're ready to explore further, you'll enjoy direct Metro subway access to Washington DC sightseeing.

The White House - Capitol Hill

The country's political epicenter is home to national memorials as well as the Supreme Court, Library of Congress and the Washington Monument. Other attractions here include American History Museum and the Holocaust Museum. Although White House tours must be reserved in advance through members of congress, last-minute tourist can explore the White House visitors' center at 15th and E Streets.

Many seasoned Washington, DC visitors prefer to visit the district's iconic memorials after dark. Crowds of tourists have all returned to their hotels, park rangers remain on duty until midnight at most locations and dramatic spotlighting illuminates the monuments' white-stone surfaces. Security is tight at most attractions, so carry as little as possible to clear inspection lines faster.

Monuments and Memorials
No visit to the District of Columbia would be complete without visits to the monuments and memorials honoring the country's presidents, war veterans, and founding fathers. Since few of them are located near Metro stops, many visitors prefer to take a bus tour.
 Smithsonian museums
The district's 14 Smithsonian museums cover a wide variety of topics. Art galleries alone cover American, African and Asian art, plus modern and contemporary works and portraiture. Other favorites include the Air and Space Museum and the National Zoo.
Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington National Cemetery is no ordinary burial ground. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands here. In addition to the eternal flame at John F. Kennedy's grave, you can also visit memorials to nurses, chaplains and Space Shuttle astronauts.
Tidal Basin
Springtime is the most picturesque time to stroll through the Tidal Basin. Pink cherry blossoms frame views across the water of the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial. The National Cherry Blossom Festival is held in late March and early April.
