Cancun Vacation Guide

Choose the rustic beauty of a Cancun eco-resort, the amenities of a high-rise hotel on the beach or the convenience of one of the area's plentiful all-inclusive resorts. No matter where you choose to stay, you'll be close to some of Mexico's most glorious beaches, archaeological sites and natural preserves.

Neighborhoods in Cancun

Cancun Resort and Entertainment District

Once known as a spring break destination, Cancun has grown into a modern resort with plenty of shopping, sightseeing and dining. Catch a tan at famous beaches like Playa Chacmool and Delifines. Visit Yamil Lu'um, a Mayan temple dating back to the 14th century. Golfers can hit the links at a number of beautiful and challenging courses. After dark, head to a cantina or one of dozens of nightclubs.

Riviera Maya

A broad area south of Cancun, the Riviera Maya includes the village of Playa del Carmen. The area also includes a plentiful assortment of newer developments and eco-resorts near the region's famed eco-parks: Xel-Há, Xcaret and Tres Rios. Accommodations range from rustic huts on the beach or the edge of the rainforest to all-inclusive resorts and luxury hotels with full-service spas.

Isla Mujeres

Although its days as an undiscovered fishing village are long over, the small island of Isla Mujeres manages to maintain its rural charm and simplicity. Caribbean-style homes and shops line the streets of the quaint downtown area. Visitors can explore a Mayan temple and lighthouse at the south end of the 5-mile-long island. From May to September, sea turtles lay their eggs along the island's sandy shores.

Cancun Travel Tip

It takes about the same amount of time to get to Cancun from many parts of North America, making it a great choice for family reunions. By air, Cancun is 3.5 hours from Chicago, 4 hours from New York and 4.5 hours from Los Angeles. Once you land, it takes less than an hour to drive to Playa del Carmen. Hop a 40-minute ferry to Isla Mujeres, or make the 30-minute crossing from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel.

Cancun Activities & Attractions

Mayan ruins
Long before plush resorts came to town, travelers trekked to the Yucatán Peninsula to see the Mayan ruins at Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Coba and Tulúm. At sunrise on the equinox, Chichén-Itzá's El Castillo pyramid casts a shadow in the shape of a snake.
eco-parks
Riviera Maya eco-parks — Xel-Há, Xcaret and Tres Rios — offer visitors a chance to see many plants and animals found nowhere else on the planet. Visitors can explore the eco-parks' beach and jungle areas, Mayan ruins, and underwater rivers and caves.
Snorkeling
Even if you're not ready for the challenge of scuba-diving, don't miss out on a chance to see Cancun's abundant sea life. Snorkeling offers an easy, inexpensive way to swim through the turquoise waters and float among bright-colored tropical fish.
