Indianapolis Vacation Guide

Indianapolis may be most famous for its Speedway, but that's not all that the city has to offer. Indy's also home to pro basketball and football teams, a renowned zoo, and a pair of respected museums dedicated to art and children's interests.

Neighborhoods in Indianapolis

Downtown Indianapolis

Families flock to the Children's Museum and the Indianapolis Zoo. For more grown-up activities, professional sports abound: Catch Pacers NBA basketball or Colts NFL football. Stroll the scenic Canal Walk or peruse Eiteljorg Museum's Native art.

West Indianapolis - Motor Speedway area

This area near The Brickyard -- one of the most famous raceways in the world -- offers more than just racing. Visit the Speedway and its Hall of Fame museum for a glimpse of racing history. The area's also home to a number of pleasant golf courses.

Northern Suburbs: Keystone and Carmel

These residential areas offer easy downtown access. Monon Trail links shops, homes, schools, parks and the fairgrounds. Take in a concert at the Performing Arts Center of Carmel, play golf at one of many courses or explore nearby Broad Ripple Park.

Indianapolis Travel Tip

During big races like the Indianapolis 500 in May and the NASCAR Brickyard 400 in August, hotel rooms become scarce and pricey all throughout the city and surrounding areas. If you're heading to the Motor Speedway -- or even if you're visiting for other reasons -- make sure to book early.

Indianapolis Activities & Attractions

Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Even if you can't make it to the Indy 500, you can get a taste of race excitement. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway offers minibus rides around its famous track, and the Hall of Fame Museum displays historical artifacts, including antique racecars.
Children's Museum of Indianapolis
It seems like every city has a hands-on museum for young visitors, but the Children's Museum of Indianapolis tops them all: It's the world's largest kid-centric museum. Even adults will love the impressive dinosaur-fossil collection.
Indianapolis Zoo
In addition to 64 acres of land-based animal exhibits, the Indianapolis Zoo is also home to Indiana's largest aquarium. Youngsters can interact with small animals in a dedicated petting area; older kids will love the roller coaster.
