A bustling Texas city with more than just a pinch of Mexican spice, San Antonio draws visitors from all over who flock to see the picturesque River Walk and glimpse the city's history. If you're looking for Tex-Mex food, you've come to the right place: San Antonio's been known as "Tamaletown" for ages.
You'll find many of San Antonio's top attractions -- including the historic Alamo -- right in the heart of downtown. Stroll the River Walk's cobblestone sidewalks past shops, clubs and restaurants. Other top attractions downtown include La Villita, the site of the city's original European settlement, and Market Square, a historic marketplace brimming with Mexican-influenced crafts and food.
SeaWorld San Antonio, the world's largest marine park, is also the home of Shamu and other aquatic performers. Want more theme-park fun? You're within a short drive of Six Flags Fiesta Texas, a prime destination for thrill seekers and families alike. Golfers can hit the links at the Golf Club of Texas at Brigg's Ranch. Take a drive to the Hill Country to see wildflowers and picturesque towns.
An attractive residential neighborhood with southwestern flair, this suburban area boasts restaurants, office buildings, movie theaters, the Windsor Park Mall and a touch of Texas history. If you're looking for good-ol' honky-tonk bars, you'll find 'em here. Fort Sam Houston, an active military installation, is also a national historic landmark with a pair of museums highlighting Texas military history.
This pleasant area 10 miles northwest of downtown is home to many prestigious medical schools and hospitals along Medical Center Drive. The medical facilities are flanked by an array of suburban homes, peaceful parks, popular restaurants and upscale office buildings.
San Antonio's historic and well-preserved Mission San Jose hosts a mariachi Mass every Sunday at noon. Get to the church early, as seats are highly coveted. The sermon is delivered in English, and hymns are sung to the tune of traditional Mexican ballads. Although respectful visitors are welcome, the Mass is a regular Sunday religious observance for the parish, not a musical performance.
