Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Enjoy some of the world's best golf courses set along the serene coast of South Carolina. Myrtle Beach is recognized as a first-rate golf vacation destination; you can tee-off on over 120 golf courses here. Roughly 80 resorts serve the area's golf properties. The Myrtle Beach/Grand Strand area also boasts a family-friendly atmosphere with shopping, sightseeing, and theater as big draws. Of course the beach is at the center of it all, with sunbathing, swimming, fishing, and all manner of water sports. Most hotels have guest privileges that offer you reduced greens fees. Check out Legends Golf Course, a challenging 54-hole, par-72 course. Handsome one-hundred-year-old oaks that stud the course will remind you of the game's Scottish origins. There are also more than 200 public and private tennis courts in the Grand Strand area. Myrtle Beach has grown into a year-round destination; South Carolina rivals Florida as a vacation destination.

Las Vegas, Nevada

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas — unless you've played one of its many championship golf courses. Then you'll want to share your experience and tell everyone about how you mastered one of the world's most challenging courses. Take the Royal Links Golf Club, for example. This fabulous family-friendly course is located just 15 minutes from the Strip. It features holes inspired by the British Open rotation courses and an atmospheric castle-style clubhouse. Royal Links pays a fine tribute to famous British Isle links courses, including the Road Hole at St. Andrews and the Postage Stamp at Royal Troon. Of course, it'd take a miracle to recreate an ocean shoreline and 50 inches of annual rainfall — but designer Perry Dye certainly did his homework.

Phoenix, Arizona

There are over 200 golf courses of varying types and lengths in the Phoenix area — good news for anyone wanting to play any time of the year. But summertime in Phoenix, while it usually brings oppressive heat, dust and monsoon thunderstorms, can be the best time to hit the links. Why? Because if you're a golfer, it offers some of the best golf deals in the country at some of the world's most challenging golf courses. This is the time of year to grab your clubs, a frozen water bottle, lots of sunscreen, and head out for 18 holes that, in the winter, would be twice as crowded and cost way more.

Maui, Hawaii

Maui golf? It's like playing in heaven! In 1999, Golf Digest named Hawaii "The Best State for Golf." From our vantage point, it's still the best. Start with the weather. In Maui there is only one season — and it's the perfect season for golf. Next, the terrain. Indescribable settings. Epic views. Rich volcanic soil. Incredible variety. Maui courses are known for their breathtaking scenery and vistas, their fast-breaking Bermuda greens and, of course, their famous trade winds, which can make even the most benign course a bigger challenge and true test of your golfing ability.

Denver, Colorado

Denver is blessed with a variety of challenging public golf courses for people of all ages and abilities. But the most interesting of the bunch has to be the Overland. This historic 18 hole championship course in the lush Platte River Valley is the oldest in the state (est. 1895). It features rolling fairways lined with stately old oak trees and cottonwoods, as well as a mixture of Colorado evergreens. It's a public course and measures 6,676 yards from the back tees and 6,097 yards from the forward tees, so it's true to challenge the best players while accommodating those with higher handicaps. Everyone who plays will enjoy the challenges — extensive mounding, strategically placed bunkers, green-side lakes, and streams. Whether you come to Overland for the picturesque views or just spend the day with some friends, the course will provide the perfect setting for a most memorable day.
